Rick Winfield joins faculty

BY NICK GALANTOWICZ

According to Kendra Wong, the growth of the Business department is paralleled to the growth of Sierra Nevada College.  Student numbers in the Business department have doubled since 2007, she said.  However, faculty numbers have remained the same.

“All of my business classes have to be in the larger of SNC classrooms,” Junior, Alex Labranche said.  “Since starting here in 2012, I’ve notice the demand for business classes has created stress to students who don’t sign up quick enough.”

In order to offer enough classes that suffice for all Business students, on March 10, a new full time business professor was officially hired.  Rick Winfield will be teaching entrepreneurship and management starting fall semester 2015.

In the 2014 spring semester Winfield was teaching as an entrepreneurship adjunct professor at University Nevada Reno and SNC.  Part of that experience influenced his return to SNC.

“I was particularly attracted to the business department at SNC.  The faculty is an amazingly talented group of folks with such diverse backgrounds,” Winfield said.  “I loved teaching my classes, but I also really loved hanging around campus, eating lunch with my students, and interacting with the members of the faculty.”

As an entrepreneur himself, Winfield has found success in his technology start-ups, ComputerTrainingSchools.Com and Veskritic, Inc.  He currently works as an adviser, consultant and angel investor to companies familiar to his background in web-development and technology.

Winfield hopes to bring his experience as an entrepreneur into the classroom.

“I feel my role is to help my students learn how to approach and think about the diverse business problems they will face during their entrepreneurial careers,” Winfield said.  “Building and marketing a business is all about storytelling.  To me, this is really what Liberal Arts is all about.”

Outside of his professional life, Winfield accredits himself to be an avid adventurer and skier.  According to his website, www.rickwinfield.com, Winfield prefers adventure that includes “climbing skins, crampons, hiking and rappelling,” to access ski lines.
