Benjamin Busch is an American actor, writer and filmmaker and teaches nonfiction in SNC’s MFA program. He served 16 years as an infantry and reconnaissance officer in the Marines, deploying to Iraq twice.

He is the author of the memoir “Dust to Dust” and has written essays published in Harper’s, The New York Times Magazine, Newsweek, The Daily Beast and NPR. Busch has been awarded the James Dickey Prize for his poetry which can be found in North American Review, Prairie Schooner, Epiphany, and Michigan Quarterly Review, to name a few.

Busch is the writer and director of the award-winning films “Sympathetic Details” and “BRIGHT.” He is best known for his role in the HBO hit series “The Wire” for his portrayal of Officer Colicchio and also appeared in the HBO mini-series “Generation Kill” as a military consultant.

A committee gathers every year to discuss potential speakers before choosing and then pursuing someone to speak at commencement.

“An informal committee shared thoughts on some prospective speakers who fit the culture of the school and had interesting stories to tell. Ben Busch has been on the faculty of our graduate writing program, but he is also an incredibly engaging public speaker who has a diverse background,” said Jim Scripps, SNC marketing director.
