Local competitions around the lake
February 27 – Swatch Freeride World Tour at Kirkwood.
Last week 61 iconic skiers and snowboarders gathered at Kirkwood, California to compete in the fourth stop of the Swatch Freeride World Tour. Athletes chose their lines from visual inspection only and had one chance to deliver their line down Kirkwood’s forbidden Cirque, a permanently closed run varying in pitch from 35 to 50 degrees. A strong showing of local athletes were able to demonstrate world class skiing and riding in conditions described as choppy, icy, and variable.
Kings Beach local Jackie Paaso took first place in the women’s ski division. Sammy Luebke of Truckee took home 2nd place in men’s snowboarding competition. Truckee local Sean Collin secured a 6th place and will continue on to Europe.
“It was an awesome day, everyone skied so good on The Cirque. I’m stoked to end up in 6th, I finally skied the way I like and it paid off,” said Collin.
